Bubble    wrap    is    a    pliable    transparent    plastic    material    used    for    packing    fragile    items.    Regularly    spaced, protruding air-filled hemispheres (bubbles) provide cushioning for fragile items. "Bubble   wrap"   is   a   generic   trademark   owned   by   Sealed Air   Corporation.   In   1957   two   inventors   named Alfred   Fielding and   Marc   Chavannes   were   attempting   to   create   a   three-dimensional   plastic   wallpaper. Although   the   idea   was   a   failure, they   found   that   what   they   did   make   could   be   used   as   packing   material.   Sealed   Air   Corp.   was   co-founded   by   Alfred Fielding in 1960. The   term   is   used   generically   for   similar   products,   such   as   bubble   pack,   bubble   paper,   air   bubble   packing,   bubble wrapping or aeroplast. Properly Bubble Wrap and BubbleWrap still are Sealed Air Corporation registered trademarks. The   bubbles   that   provide   the   cushioning   for   fragile   or   sensitive   objects   are   generally   available   in   different   sizes, depending   on   the   size   of   the   object   being   packed,   as   well   as   the   level   of   cushioning   protection   that   is   needed.   Multiple layers   might   be   needed   to   provide   shock   and   vibration   isolation.   A   single   layer   might   be   used   just   as   a   surface protective layer. Bubble wrap is used to form some types of mailing envelopes. Bubble   wrap   is   most   often   formed   from   polyethylene   (LDPE)   film   with   a   shaped   side   bonded   to   a   flat   side   to   form   air bubbles.   Some   types   of   bubble   wrap   have   a   lower   permeation   barrier   film   to   allow   longer   useful   life   and resistance to loss of air in vacuums. The   bubbles   can   be   as   small   as   6   millimeters   (1/4   inch)   in   diameter,   to   as   large   as   26   millimeters   (1   inch)   or   more,   to provide   added   levels   of   shock   absorption   during   transit.   The   most   common   bubble   size   is   1   centimeter.[citation needed]   In   addition   to   the   degree   of   protection   available   from   the   size   of   the   air   bubbles   in   the   plastic,   the   plastic material   itself   can   offer   some   forms   of   protection   for   the   object   in   question.   For   example,   when   shipping   sensitive electronic   parts   and   components,   a   type   of   bubble   wrap   is   used   that   employs   an   anti-static   plastic   that dissipates   static   charge,   thereby   protecting   the   sensitive   electronic   chips   from   static   which   can   damage them.
Rolls   of   foam   packaging   can   protect   sensitive   or   delicate   surfaces.   Non-abrasive,   leaves   no   residue   yet lightweight. Ideal for glass, polished surfaces. It   is   manufactured   using   an   extrusion   process   and   is   normally   available   in   several   forms   i.e.   sheets,   rolls,   pipes,   rods, L   sections,   C   sections   and   U   sections   with   each   have   its   own   set   of   uses.   It   is   most   widely   used   in   form   of   sheets   and rolls. LDPE   is   defined   by   a   density   range   of   0.910–0.940   g/cm3.   It   is   not   reactive   at   room   temperatures,   except   by   strong oxidizing   agents,   and   some   solvents   cause   swelling.   It   can   withstand   temperatures   of   80   °C   continuously   and   95   °C for a short time. Made in translucent or opaque variations, it is quite flexible and tough. LDPE    has    more    branching    (on    about    2%    of    the    carbon    atoms)    than    HDPE,    so    its    intermolecular    forces (instantaneous-dipole   induced-dipole   attraction)   are   weaker,   its   tensile   strength   is   lower,   and   its   resilience   is   higher. Also, because its molecules are less tightly packed and less crystalline due to the side branches, its density is lower.

An   antistatic   bag   is   a   bag   used   for   storing   electronic   components,   which are prone to damage caused by electrostatic discharge (ESD). These   bags   are   usually   plastic   polyethylene   terephthalate   (PET)   and   have   a distinctive   color   (silvery   for   metallised   film,   pink   or   black   for   polyethylene).   The polyethylene   variant   may   also   take   the   form   of   foam   or   bubble   wrap,   either   as sheets   or   bags.   Multiple   layers   of   protection   are   often   used   to   protect   from   both mechanical    damage    and    electrostatic    damage.    A    protected    device    can    be packaged   inside   a   metalized   PET   film   bag,   inside   a   pink   polyethylene   bubble- wrap   bag,   which   is   finally   packed   inside   a   rigid   black   polyethylene   box   lined   with pink   poly   foam.   It   is   important   that   the   bags   only   be   opened   at   static-free workstations.

Dissipative    antistatic    bags,    as    the    name    suggests,    are    made    of    standard polyethylene    with    a    static    dissipative    coating    or    layer    on    the    plastic.    This prevents   buildup   of   a   static   charge   on   the   surface   of   the   bag,   as   it   dissipates   the charge   to   ground   (i.e.,   whatever   other   surface   it   is   touching).   This   bridge   to ground   is   achieved   with   the   inclusion   of   a   tallow   amine   on   the   bags   surface which   attracts   moisture   that   can   conduct   the   charge   to   another   surface,   or   to   the atmosphere   itself.   In   this   sense,   this   type   is   truly   'antistatic'   in   that   it   hinders   the formation    of    static    charges.    It,    however,    is    not    resistant    to    electrostatic discharge;   if   something   else   with   a   charge   touches   the   bag   (such   as   a   persons hand),   its   charge   would   easily   transfer   through   the   bag   and   its   contents.   These bags   are   usually   pink   or   red   in   color   because   of   the   dissipative   chemical   layer. Black   bags   also   exist,   wherein   the   polyethylene   is   manufactured   containing trace amounts of carbon, forming a partial shield, though not a complete one.

Conductive   antistatic   bags   are   manufactured   with   a   layer   of   conductive   metal,   often   aluminum,and   a dielectric   layer   of   plastic   covered   in   a   static   dissipative   coating.   This   forms   both   a   shield   and   a   non- conductive   barrier,   shielding   the   contents   from   static   charge   via   the   Faraday   cage   effect.   These   bags   are preferred    for    more    sensitive    parts,    but    they    also    see    use    in    environments    where    sparks    would    be hazardous,   such   as   oxygen-rich   areas   in   aircraft   and   hospitals.   Metalized   bags   are   more   fragile   than   their nonmetal   counterparts,   however,   as   any   puncture   compromises   the   integrity   of   the   shield.   In   addition,   they have   a   limited   shelf   life,   as   the   metal   substrate   can   deteriorate   over   time.   These   bags   are   often   gray   or silver owing to the metal layer, while still being transparent to some degree. Foam   also   exists   in   both   pink   (dissipative)   and   black   (conductive)   varieties,   used   for   storing individual leaded components by piercing the leads into the foam. The   pink   or   blue   “anti   static”   bags   are   usually   single   layer   bags   that   fall   into   this   “anti   static”   range   within the   static   dissipative   range. These   bags   do   not   stop   ESD,   but   they   prevent   the   build   up   of   static   charges   on their surfaces that precedes ESD.
